Kalami s Beach - Corfu island - Greece
The exquisitely beautiful bay at Kalami has little in the way of a beach, just a small stretch of white shingle littered with sunbeds and with showers and toilets. The stones are sharp, so footwear is advisable, but the sheltered bay is safe for snorkeling. The resort has strong romantic and literary connection through the the Durrells - Lawrence and Gerald who had a lovely home here. Unfortunately it is also now home to one of the biggest self-catering compounds on Corfu sprawling up the hillside though the owners have planted enough wisteria to hide most of it. The coast of Albania sits 2km offshore and the seas get choppy in the channel should you hire a boat, not to mention the dozens of passing cruise boats. There are three minimarkets and a couple of tourist shops in the village and many good tavernas. On the headland near Kouloura there are a couple of sheltered coves with flat rocks but you need a boat to get to them.

kalami corfu

Beach location: Kalami is accessed from the main northern highway from Corfu town. Kalami beach is signposted from the main road beyond Nissaki and approximately 1 km. after Kouloura as you travel north. A twisty, well surfaced road takes you through the olive groves, dropping you into a pleasant bay.
Disabled access: Disabled access was always possible but is now improved with the addition of decking onto the beach, making life a lot easier for wheelchair users.
Car parking: Yes. However, this is very limited and gets extremely busy in the high season. Most people end up parking on the roadside, whereverthey can. Food outlets/restaurants: Several beach-side tavernas and a bar or two. Sand/pebbles/shingle: Pebbles and shingle to and beyond the waterline. A beautifully clear sea set in a pretty bay. Ideal for fishing, snorkelling and people watching. A really pleasant place to while away the hours. Sunbeds/umbrellas: Yes. There are only a limited number of each and they tend to run out in high season.
Showers: Yes (allegedly) although they aren't particularly visible. For toilets use the tavernas and bars.
Safe for children: The biggest problem is with stones underfoot. The waters tend to be placid and even novice swimmers will probably enjoy the environment.
Watersports: Limited. Maybe water skiing, maybe not. Otherwise, a few pedaloes and the odd canoe tend to be it. Main users: Tourists. Well cared for: Yes.
Mooring for boats: Yes. Moor off in the sheltered bay. Yachts will find it less busy here than nearby Agni, particularly in high season. Next to quayside/harbour: No.
Storm drains/outlets into sea: None observed.
Natural shady areas: Although Kalami beach itself is exposed, there are tree-lined hills and olive groves surrounding it, making for pleasant walks and some cover from the heat. Any other facilities: There is now an embryonic resort building up here with a few shops, apartments to let and even an upmarket villa or two. Distance to main resorts: lpsos and Pirgi are about 15km. Corfu Town (Kerkyra) is 30km.
Public transport: Buses will take you to the main road. Alternately, telephone a taxi or rely on independent transport. Blue Flag: Yes.
