Up the north west coast out of Kerkyra you must wait for
BARBATI for the beaches to improve. This long, narrow kilometre of sand, shingle and pebble is away from the main road and set in a fine bay cloaked in pines. There are sunbeds for hire and showers and toilets at the back of the beach as well as small tavernas and beach bars. The east facing bay is very sheltered and the water is shallow for children though it does drop off steeply a little way out. Rocky shores at both ends of the beach provide interest. The remains of an ancient church also add interest though it is normally closed to the public.
Barbati beach would be much quieter if it didn't suffer daily visits by boatloads from Kerkyra and Ipsos. The southern end also offers the usual water sports. The back of the beach is covered with three vast complexes of apartments.
The resort village is 10 minutes from
Barbati beach up very steep lanes to the main road where there are stunning views over the bay. The resort is popular with families though not yet out of package tour wasteland with dozens of hotels and apartments nearby. There are the usual tavernas and bars, mostly geared for families. Nightlife is low key but
Corfu town is only 30 minutes away on the bus for those that prefer it more lively though there are plenty of shops and restaurants in the village
